EXTRAPOLATIONS -TITLE SEQUENCE + GFX DESIGN

Lisa Bolan and Angus Wall with Elastic brought me on as a designer and animator in the early going of discovery for their upcoming work with Apple TV for the streaming series Extrapolations. This turned into one of those bookings that will go down as a high mark of this period of my career. It was a relatively small team, but working directly with Lisa and Angus was an eye-opening experience. To get an inside glimpse and be someone trying to bring their vision to life means so much to me as an artist.

They were both very open to ideas and exploration throughout the whole process. The end direction that the show went with their titles was very pulled back from the initial ideas and direction we were going in. But, the work we created throughout this month long booking was very memorable for me.

We primarily locked into a few key elements in which the story of the title sequence was grounded. Their initial ideas were much heavier in telling a story than most title sequences, so we needed some compelling visuals to drive that story forward. Something that came up about halfway through the booking was this concept of a "multiverse" of sorts. The idea that there are countless ways our climate could be affected by human involvement in the future was something we spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to show visually. I ran with one of Angus's thoughts of a string expanding into a single view of several possible realities. I began playing with this thought and visualizing it as a layered stretch of cloth-like planes that expand from a single timeline.

DATA VISUALIZATION & INTEGRATION

We also needed some way of grounding data visualization within footage and imagery of the changing planet. This led to a suite of explorations around the integration of data charts and pie graphs interacting with the landscape.

The bulk of this project was spent on exploring ways that a single-line chart could show the many possibilities of the future climate. This proved to be a headscratcher of a problem to solve, but in the end, I thought we had the beginnings of some very interesting concepts. The final show open is far more minimal than these early explorations but I would have loved to see where this thought could have led.
